CHEWING THE TUNDRA

The exhibition Chewing the Tundra collected all experiences of Chill Survive Network to Kunsthalle Exnergasse, WUK, in Vienna, Austria, NOV3-DEC17 2022.

In Chewing the Tundra scientists and artists addressed our interspecies realities by engaging with human/non-human narratives and reflecting on how to survive in the profoundly transformed Arctic.

Pia Lindman Reporting from Nuuk, Marraq, and Ilulissat in Greenland with Contributions by Saara Mahbouba, Valeria Nekhaeva, and Mirka Sulander

Videos from Marraq Marraq 1 Marraq 2 Marraq 3 Marraq, a peninsula 100km South West of Nuuk, is the location of a former US military base (West Bluie 4) that was shut down in 1948. Amongst delapidated equipment you can find barrels (jet fuel?), pieces of lead, and asbestos. I also found a pile of metal gravel, the grains of which were of a light grey color with a bluish tint/shine. This, like some tens of other abandoned US military bases in Greenland are slated for clean-up by the Danish and Greenlandic governments. This clean-up work has recently been allocated 300 M Danish Crowns. Ilulissat is located next to Kangia fjord (Unesco site). Sermeq Kujalleq glacier calves icebergs into the fjord and with its pace of 20 meters per day, it is one of the most active calving glaciers in the world. Singing for Lead A call to sing a spell for Lead: a collaboration with Viennese singers Rehearsals: three weekdays in November Final Event: 25th of November at 7PM Contact piuska@mac.com for more information According to Finnish healer-traditions the place of Lead is in the depths of the Earth, where it cannot poison living organisms and wreak havoc on nerve cells. However, Lead has been dug up to the surface by us humans - to serve our industrial and economic - even belligerent - motives. Lead is a preferred metal in bullets, due to its density and stability in heat. In the act of shooting, a shooter inhales lead particles and eventually develops lead poisoning. A visible symptom of lead poisoning is aggression. War breeds war.
